2025 Season Review (Part 2) - League Reviews

22 Sep by Cameron Millar

Throughout our hectic season, we run three different leagues (Fours, Triples and Senior Triples) and a fourth in association with the Aberdeen District Ladies Bowling Association (ADLBA) the very popular Mixed Triples League.

The Senior Triples takes place on a Monday during the day with all the other leagues taking place on a Friday evening.

Fours League Sponsored by Phil Anderson Financial Services :

This season saw an introduction of a change in the league format, with all Clubs playing in one league and once they had played each other once, the top 4 would then play each other once more, carrying forward the points gained from the first stage, to decide who would win the league. This would mean the top four would play 15 matches. A separate knock-out event was also introduced for those clubs finishing in 5th to 12th position to provide additional matches.

At the end of round 3 (approximately 25% of the first stage matches) it was Whitehall who led the way with maximum 15 points followed by Westhill, Abergeldie and Polmuir filling the top 4 positions.

At just beyond the half-way stage (7 rounds), Whitehall had a 3 point lead over Northern with Kittybrewster and Westhill a further point and 2 points behind respectively. Four teams sat within 5 points of fourth position. With up to 5 points available for each match this meant that we were in for an exciting 2nd half.

At the end of round 10, Whitehall were 2 points ahead of Kittybrewster albeit with a game in hand, with Northern in 3rd and Westhill holding the fourth position, 3 points ahead of Polmuir.

Round 13 would decide the top 4 and the knockout participating clubs. Whitehall extended their lead to take a valuable 6 points advantage over Kittybrewster into the find 3 matches and both these clubs would be joined by Northern (3rd) and Abergeldie (4th) who had a great finish to pip Balgownie & Westhill to the top 4! In the knockout, Polmuir, Newhills, Woodend, Culter, Portlethen & Seafield joined Balgownie & Westhill.

After the first round of the top 4, Kittybrewster had closed the gap at the top to 4 points with the clubs due to face each other in the last match! In the second round Whitehall picked up maximum points v Northern however with Kittybrewster dropping points v Abergeldie it meant that Whitehall won the 2025 League with one round of matches to spare. The final top 4 standing were Whitehall, Kittybrewster, Northern and Abergeldie.

In our first knockout ‘plate’ event it was the top two ‘seeds’ Westhill and Balgownie who reached the final which saw Westhill winning.

Triples League Sponsored by Mark Shaw Funeral Services:

The triples league format remained the same as recent years, with 2 stages – stage 1 with all clubs playing each other once to decide the league winners and then the top 8 going on to play a knockout competition.

After 3 rounds (first quarter). Polmuir led by 1 point from Seafield and Whitehall.

After 7 rounds, Polmuir still topped the league by a point from Drumoak with Whitehall in 3rd.

After 10 rounds, Drumoak had moved into the lead by 2 points from Polmuir with Northern 7.5 points adrift in 3rd.

Going into the 2nd last round of matches Drumoak and Polmuir were tied however POlmuir only had one match remaining whereas Drumoak had 2 matches, therefore POlmuir needed maximum points! Unfortunately Polmuir drew a blank v Balgownie and with Drumoak picking up 2 points v Westhill, this brought Drumoak their very first Bon Accord league title in only their 2nd year of membership.

In the knockout, Drumoak fell at the first hurdle v Abergeldie whilst Polmuir lost in the ‘semi-finals’ v Whitehall. In the final, Abergeldie defeated Whitehall.

Senior Triples Sponsored by The Baillie Family:

The senior triples is a very competitive league and the only league where all 16 member clubs participate.

A third of the way through (round 5), Northern led by 0.5 points from Abergeldie with Polmuir a further point behind.

By the end of round 10, , it was Abergeldie who were in front by 3 points from Newhills with Kittybrewster in 3rd.

Going into the last round of matches, Abergeldie still topped the league but only by 1.5 points from Northern. As fate would have, the clubs were scheduled to play each other in the final week at Northern – Abergeldie required 2 points to clinch the title!

The title decider was a tight affair as expected and in the end the points were shared with each team winning one match each with only 2 shots of a difference in each match!

Therefore, Abergeldie clinched the title with Newhills pipping Northern to the runners-up position on shots difference!

ADLBA Bon Accord Mixed Triples (Sponsorship available for this league!):

This event only commenced on 2022 with 18 entries and now 4 seasons later the 2025 season saw 37 entries from 17 different clubs!

Following completion of the competitive section matches played home and away, entries from Westhill, Laurencekirk (2 teams), Balgownie, Kittybrewster, Polmuir, Abergeldie and Harlaw qualified. A new winner was guaranteed as Laurencekirk and Polmuir qualified for the final which saw Laurencekirk securing a comfortable win!

Well done to all our winners and for all players who took part in the leagues to make them such a success. Across all 4 leagues there have been nearly 500 matches played on Friday evenings ….. WOW!!

Without your participation, our leagues and our season would not be the success it is! A huge thank you to all the Club Match Secretaries and other club members who have submitted results in a timely manner to me, as without this, I would not be able to process and publish the results and updated league standings!

A huge thank you to our league sponsors and we very much appreciate your continued support of our Association.

As always, it has been an enjoyable season has once again we see increased followers on both our App and Facebook pages and record number of page views across these sites.
