2025 Bon Accord Under 17 Singles Sponsored by Cameron Millar - Review

14 Sep by Cameron Millar

A great day was had at Newhills Bowling Club as 10 of our talented under 17s took to the green to battle it out to be this season’s Under 17 champion. A new name would appear on the trophy to follow on some well known names who have gone onto to achieve both County and National recognition!

The players were split into 2 sections of five and played each other once over 8 ends to decide the top 2 who progressed to the semi finals.

In Section A, Archie Scott (Newhills) topped the section with 7 points out of a possible 8. The 1 point dropped in a draw in his first match v Libby Craig (Kittybrewster). Runner-up was Megan Orchard (Polmuir) who had 6 points with her only points dropped being a defeat to Archie 7-9.

In Section B, Karris Bell (Polmuir) won all 4 matches to top the section with a maximum 8 points. The runner-up position came down between Lewis Reid (Aberdeen) and Harrison Campbell (Whitehall) and their head-to-head was the deciding factor – Lewis edged the match 7-4 to finish runner-up with 5 points and Harrison finishing 3rd with 4 points.

The semi-final draw saw Archie face Lewis with Karris facing Megan in a repeat of their recent ADLBA Under 18 singles final which Megan won. The semi-finals were played over 12 ends and with all four players producing excellent bowls, there could only be two players moving forward to contest the final.

In the Archie v Lewis match it was Archie who led from the start and produced the more consistent bowls on his home green. But credit to Lewis, who was playing in his first competition outside his home club. It was Archie who progressed with a 13-4 success.

The Karris v Megan match also produced great bowls from both players but it was Karris who produced the telling and ‘big’ bowls when the situation required to build an early lead. Megan led 5-4 after 5 ends, however Karris stepped up a gear from this point. With ends running out Megan was trying her best and producing great bowls but Karris kept producing bowls to get across the winning line 14-5 and reach the final.

The final was played over 15 ends with agreement from both players and it was Karris who started better surging into a 8-1 lead after 5 ends. Archie responded superbly as he reduced the deficit to 8-6 with 5 ends left to play. The next 2 ends saw Archie reduce the deficit to one shot at 9-8 with three ends left. End 13 saw more superb bowls as both players had 2 bowls each within 10 inches of the jack..however it was Karris that had the 2 closest to move 11-8 ahead with 2 ends left. End 14 saw Archie hold one shot with one bowl each left. Karris played with great weight and with the help of an edge, managed to push Archie’s shot bowl out of the head and left Karris holding 3 shots. Archie was unable to reduce the deficit with his last bowl and therefore Karris emerged victorious by 14-8 in a fantastic match that was closer than the final scoreline indicated.

Well done Karris and hard lines Archie. Also well done Karris for your winners speech!
