5 Sep by Cameron Millar

We were back at Northern BC tonight for the four quarter final matches.

On rink 2, the two Andrews, Reilly and Thomson put on a great display of drawing bowls throughout the match. It was Andrew Thomson who dominated the early stages marching into a 11-3 lead. Despite Andrew Reilly’s efforts to clos the gap, the deficit was nine shots at 9-18. A four and a single cut the deficit to only four shots a 14-18, however Andrew Thomson scored a double on the next end to lead 20-14. With darkness descending, Andrew Reilly extended the match by winning the next two ends to make it 17-20. However it was Andrew Thomson who got the single he required to edge the win 21-17.

On rink 3, local champion, and former Champion of Champions winner, Graeme Stuart faced Rory Thomson from Woodend, again another former winner of this competition. It was Graeme who made the better start quickly moving 10-0 up after only 5 ends. Despite scoring a four on he next end, Rory still trailed 14-4 before he scored a further 3 shots. Graeme’s lead was cut to six (16-10) and 18-12. Two ends later saw Graeme secure a 21-12 victory.

On rink 4, Kittybrewster’s Neil Anderson faced Gus Macgillivray from Cults and it was Neil who raced into a 10-1 lead, however Gus won three of the next four ends to reduce the deficit to fours shots at 11-7. However, Neil stepped up a gear winning the next six ends and move into the semi-finals winning 21-7.

On rink 5, former Bon Accord Singles winner Callum Work from Polmuir faced Newhills Dave Masson who was trying to follow in the footsteps of his clubmate Liam Angus who won the competition last year. Callum quickly moved 8-3 ahead but the lead was reduced to 9-6 after 8 ends. However Callum then won the next 7 ends to move to the edge of victory at 20-6. Three ends later Callum closed out the match 21-8.

Congratulations to our four winners and commiserations to the four defeated quarter finalists.

We now move onto the semi-finals tomorrow night where the line-up is as follows:
