2019 Bon Accord Finals Day - Review

25 Aug 2019 by Cameron Millar

What a great day we had at Balgownie BC today for our finals day. The weather was probably the best we have had all season and we witnessed great bowls in all the matches held.

Champion of Champions Singles:
Graham McDonald (Kittybrewster) and Scot Finlayson (Northern) contested the final and it was Scot that made the better start picking up a 4 on end 6 to move 9-2 ahead. Graham replied with a 2 and a 3 to be only two shots behind. After 11 ends, the scores were tied at 11 all. Five ends later, Graham led 16-15 and soon after, Graham collected the five shots required to win his first title by 21-15.

Under 25 Singles:
Defending champion, Jak Miller (Kittybrewster) and Balgownie’s 2019 Club Champion, Ben Ewen contested this final. Ben went 6-0 ahead before Jak got on the board. Jak pulled the score back to 7-6 to Ben, who then scored back-to-back threes to move 13-6 ahead. Ben maintained his lead at 16-10 and then scored a maximum 4 on end 16 to move to 20-10. At the next end Ben claimed the shot he required to win the U25 title for a second time by 21-10.

Top 10 Final:
This year’s final was contested by the holders Kittybrewster and the 2017 winners Westhill.
The singles between Jak Miller & Craig Burnett saw a even start with score being 6-6 after 8 ends. In the pairs, Kitty’s Daniel McKendrick & Scott Runcie stormed ahead 10-1 after 7 ends. Westhill’s triples of Andrew Reilly, Bill Baillie & Dave Cobban-Shaw also stormed ahead 13-3 after 7 ends, whilst Westhill made the better start in the fours to lead 7-1 after 6 ends.

At the half-way point in the match, Kitty were up in the singles and the pairs, Westhill were up in the triples and the fours with Westhill two shots up overall….so nothing in it!

Westhill fours skipped by Alan McKay continued to dominate and ran out winners 23-4. Westhill also recorded a big win in the triples ending 23-8 ahead. In the singles, Jak was on the edge of victory at 20-11, however Craig played some great bowls to reduce the deficit to only 20-19 before Jak got the shot he needed to win 21-19. Finally in the pairs, Westhill’s Ronald McDougall and Ross Forbes recovered 6-12 down to lead 15-12 with only two ends to go before Kitty scored six shots to win 18-15.
