Andrew Hamilton Trophy Week 2 - Bon Accord v Northern Counties - Report

19 May 2019 by Cameron Millar

Bon Accord made the long journey to Tain to face Northern Counties looking to build on their opening win v Buchan last week. However, Northern Counties had an impressive win last week away at Angus.

In overcast, with very light rain conditions, Bon Accord got off to a good start with both Roy Henry’s and Eric Gallen’s rinks scoring a count on the opening end. However Northern Counties replied with counts against Alan McKay & Andrew Thomson’s rinks.

After 22 ends played the score was tied at 21-21.

Over the next 8 ends Northern Counties moved in front and with 5 ends played across all rinks they led 36-24. However, as witnessed on several occasions last year, this Bon Accord squad has great fighting & team spirit and they immediately started to reel the deficit in – with 44 ends played Bon Accord only trailed by 3 (41-44).

Northern Counties responded and with 10 ends played across all the rinks they led 58-50 with the individual rink scores as follows:

Andrew Thomson 10, M Ross 12
Alan McKay 9, I Penwright 9
Roy Henry 9, D Frew 10
Kevin Harper 9, S Harrigan 6
Ross Stewart 3, K Mackay 11
Eric Gallen 8, K Ross 10

Bon Accord started the 3rd quarter well and after 67 ends played we now led 62-61 and this soon became a lead of 77-64 with 51 ends remaining.

Northern Counties responded once more and with only 29 ends left to be played the Bon Accord lead was only 1 shot (91-90).

Bon Accord continued to keep our noses in front and with 13 ends left the lead was 103-99.

It was at this point that Bon Accord changed gear and secured the win – 7 unanswered shots over the next 4 ends saw the score change to 110-99 with 9 ends left – then 113-101 with 6 ends left and 119-101 with 3 ends left.

Three singles lost over the last three ends resulted in a final score of Bon Accord 119, Northern Counties 104.

The individual rink scores were

Andrew Thomson 19, M Ross 19
Alan McKay 22, I Penwright 20
Roy Henry 30, D Frew 12
Kevin Harper 16, S Harrigan 17
Ross Stewart 8, K Mackay 23
Eric Gallen 24, K Ross 13

So 2 wins out of 2 and a maximum 4 points on the board.

We now move forward to week 3 back on home territory at Balgownie, where we entertain Angus next Saturday 25th May at 2pm.

A huge thanks to the travelling support from reserves, squad members, officials and spectators, which benefits the players.

Until next week – c’mon the Bon Accord!!
