This year’s Bon Accord Singles final must surely be regarded as one of the best especially for drama, excitement and a fantastic comeback.
Played between two of the Bon Accord’s finest singles players, Scott Runcie (Westhill) and Eric Gallan (Kittybrewster).
The game commenced at a slow rate with only singles being scored over the first 8 ends, Scott leading 6-2.
From 6-4 up, Scott went on a run of scoring ends to move in to a 17-5 lead, and it looked like Scott would go on to win his first Bon Accord Singles title.
However, Eric started to peg the lead back to get back to 17-11, however Scott then scored two successive singles to move within sight of the title at 19-11. At the next end, with game against, Eric played a great bowl to draw the shot with his last bowl and then won the next 2 ends to claw back to 19-15.
Then it was Scott’s turn to play a great last bowl as he lay 3 or 4 down, but drew to get another single and move onto 20-15 up.
At the following end, Scott again lay the match only for Eric to fire with his last bowl, just caught the edge of the jack and burnt the end!
Eric then scored a 1 and a 2 on the next 2 ends to move the score to 20-18 to Scott.
Then, at what turned out to be the last end, Eric lay 3 after his first 3 bowls – Scott fired and removed one of the shots. Eric replaced it with his last. With his last bowl, Scott fired again and caught one of his front bowls, and both the front bowl and his last disappeared out of the head without changing the position. Eric scored 3 and sealed a thrilling comeback to win 21-20 and secure his 2nd Bon Accord Singles title in 3 years having won in 2015.
A great game and one where there didn’t really deserve to be a loser.
